Spiritual Warfare and The Choice God Gives Us

In truth, our choices are really quite limited. God gives us the opportunity to choose Him or the alternative. That is the only real choice because all of the other choices are really the same thing.

Free Will & The Choice God Gives Us

Thinking about free will, the choices we’re given are really quite limited.

We’re basically given the opportunity to choose God...or not.

FREE WILL: The power of the will to determine itself and to act of itself, without compulsion from within or coercion from without. It is the faculty of an intelligent being to act or not act, to act this way or another way, and is therefore essentially different from the operations of irrational beings that merely respond to a stimulus and are conditioned to be sensory objects.

The Garden of Eden and Eve's Choice

Our opportunity to choose God or not is kind of like the choice Eve had in the garden. There is nothing withheld from her, but she is given the free will to sin against God if she so chooses.

She had free will access to everything good but not to what was not good.

When she chose to sin, it sort of flipped things. Essentially, the forbidden fruit, The Knowledge of Good and Evil, put us in control -- where now we have free will access to everything corrupt but can choose the one good thing in the midst of that.

More Freedom: But is it Really?

The paradox is: she gained us access to more freedom, but that greater freedom makes it harder for us to choose what is good, mainly because it puts us in control and enables us to choose substitutes for the real Good.

In essence, it puts us into a constant battle with our own sinfulness/temptation in order to choose the Good. It’s a time where confusion reigns. The deceiver is “the god of this world."

So the great dragon was cast out, that serpent of old, called the Devil and Satan, who deceives the whole world; he was cast to the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.
- Revelation 12:9

The Temptation to Doubt God

For Eve, she only had to trust God and not be allured by the unknown. Apparently, she was not allured by the “forbidden fruit” until Satan talked in her ear.

That is hard for us to imagine because we are so under the influence of Satan’s thinking that we think it cruel that God would set up a “temptation” – forbidden fruit.

But Adam and Eve do not appear to be bothered by it until they doubt God, and it did not occur to them to doubt Him until Satan suggested it through lies. Satan is truly the enemy of our souls. Even though it is not better to be in control, we still think it is.

A Plethora of Choices? Or Just Two

Back to our choices, I think we tend to believe that we have a whole plethora of choices. For example, we can choose any religion we want or make up our own.

But in truth, our choices are really quite limited. God gives us the opportunity to choose Him or the alternative. That is the only real choice because all of the other choices are really the same thing.

To an independent, controlling person like myself, something feels constricting, almost unfair, about that realization. I think:

I don’t get to choose what’s inside of that -- to define it? It’s just this or that?

I would probably not be bothered by this if I were not thoroughly deceived regarding my ability to choose what I want. God help me.

It’s actually a good parent that limits the choices their child has.

It’s actually empowering because they really learn what is inside of choosing instead of continuing to be deceived about endless opportunities to have what they want and instead of being overwhelmed by choices they are not really capable of making in terms of their current wisdom and maturity.

We know from studies that children who are provided boundaries feel freer to run and play, forgetting the worries of the world. But in a play yard with no fences, they will crowd in closer.

The Limitation of Choice

If you think about it, knowing “what we want” does not require us to be a certain age. This is what so many are fighting for in the political realm: to let people of any age choose what they want. Why? The logic goes: because it’s unfair not to.

While knowing what we want does not require an age, or maturity, knowing what is good or how to make a good choice does. That is why parents lovingly limit their children’s choices. Using this analogy, we can see that the limits of the choices our God gives us must be in proportion to what we can actually handle, which is not much compared to what we think we can handle.

It’s a lot like Stephen Covey’s circle of influence.

"There are two "circles" we can use to categorize our worries: the Circle of Concern (the things we care about), and the Circle of Influence (things we care about and can affect)."
- MindBodyGreen

Choosing God Yields True Spiritual Growth

If we can operate inside that simple choice we have, from there, we can actually grow in wisdom and maturity – becoming better able to make choices.

Only within that simple choice can we grow. Outside of it, we are not growing at all. This is the person who may themselves be saved but who essentially bring nothing with them into the new Kingdom because everything they have built in life will be revealed and burned in the fire.

According to the grace of God given to me, like a skilled master builder I laid a foundation, and someone else is building upon it. Let each one take care how he builds upon it. For no one can lay a foundation other than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ. Now if anyone builds on the foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw— each one's work will become manifest, for the Day will disclose it, because it will be revealed by fire, and the fire will test what sort of work each one has done. If the work that anyone has built on the foundation survives, he will receive a reward. If anyone's work is burned up, he will suffer loss, though he himself will be saved, but only as through fire.
- 1 Corinthians 3:10-15

And if we mature and build on the same foundation that has already been laid, we will “reign with Him:

  • "If we have died with him, we will also live with him; if we endure, we will also reign with him." (2 Timothy 2:12)

  • "And you have made them a kingdom and priests to our God, and they shall reign on the earth.” (Revelation 5:10)

  • "Then I saw thrones, and seated on them were those to whom the authority to judge was committed. Also I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded for the testimony of Jesus and for the word of God, and those who had not worshiped the beast or its image and had not received its mark on their foreheads or their hands. They came to life and reigned with Christ for a thousand years. The rest of the dead did not come to life until the thousand years were ended. This is the first resurrection. Blessed and holy is the one who shares in the first resurrection! Over such the second death has no power, but they will be priests of God and of Christ, and they will reign with him for a thousand years." (Revelation 20:4-6)

and we will even “judge angels."

"Do you not know that we are to judge angels? How much more, then, matters pertaining to this life!"
- 1 Corinthians 6:3
